Detroit’s 31st annual Concert of Colors celebrates community, culture and diversity
DETROIT, MI (JULY 18, 2023) — Starting on July 19th and running through until the 23rd is Detroit’s 31st annual Concert of Colors festival, a free diversity-themed music festival hosted in metro Detroit.
This week-long festival is open to the public and over the years has become a uniting and celebratory summer event. The goal of the Concert of Colors is to create dialogues surrounding freedom of expression and welcoming all through music and dance from around the world.
Festival attendees can expect to see dozens of performances from artists including Julian Marley, twice Grammy-nominated singer and son of Bob Marley, Jessica Care Moore, the Arab National Orchestra, Thornetta Davis and many other talented performers with a variety of musical styles.
A major focus of the Concert of Colors is world music, including the indigenous music of the Motor City, but attendees can also expect to see and enjoy ethnic food, merchandise vendors, movies, poetry, children’s activities and more.
As of 2019, the Detroit Institue of Arts has served as the mainstage for the Concert of Colors, with other performances both indoors and outdoors at Metro Detroit’s cultural institutions such as the Scarab Club and Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. In recent years, the attendance at this colorful and upbeat event has totaled more than 30,000.
Housed in Culture Source, this event brings together 150 arts organizations in Southeast Michigan to bring together diversity, talent, and people of Detroit as an impactful large-scale arts festival of the Midwest.
