Detroit has a rich LGBTQIA+ history dating back to the 1970’s. LGBTQ icons from Detroit like DJ Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale the “Godmother of House” and Ruth Ellis, Activist and Matriarch of the Black LGBTQ+ community, helped create a creative and safe space for black and queer people in Detroit. Christopher Street Detroit held Michigan’s first ever pride celebration in 1972 and pride celebrations like Hotter than July, which started in 1995 by non-profit LGBT Detroit is the world’s longest running black pride celebration and is still being held right here in Detroit’s lush and historic Palmer Park.
Detroit’s largest pride event; Motor City Pride started in 1972 as a protest against homophobic laws and has now turned into an annual two day festival with a celebratory parade at Hart Plaza.

You can find more LGBTQIA+ friendly bars and restaurants in Metro Detroit’s most well-known LGBTQ-friendly neighborhood, Ferndale. SOHO Bar is a popular bar in the area for LGBTQ people to meet and hangout featuring weekly events like karaoke and dance parties.
