Overview
The BRED Hip-Hop Theatre Festival (BHHTF) is a three-day celebration of hip-hop culture and theatrical storytelling, held at Wayne State University's Hillberry Gateway Theatre. As Detroit's only hip-hop theatre festival, BHHTF brings together artists, audiences, and the community through original performances, interactive experiences, and cultural programming.
The festival features an improv show, engaging activities for youth and adults, and 16 BARS—a showcase of four original one-act plays created by Detroit playwrights and lyricists.
As we celebrate more than 50 years of hip-hop, BHHTF honors the genre's enduring influence by elevating its voices on and off the stage. Through innovative performances and community engagement, the festival creates opportunities for artists to develop new work while inspiring audiences to experience hip-hop as a dynamic and powerful art form.
