Award-winning jazz vocalist Sky Covington takes center stage for an evening of live jazz, comedy, food, vendors and old-school Detroit nightlife

DETROIT, MI — After an exciting September 23 soft launch, Sky Covington’s Preservation of Jazz returns to Richy’s Ballroom on Wednesday, October 14, with Jazz on Repeat: Sweetest Day Kickoff Edition—and this time, the spotlight shines brightly on the woman behind the vision, Sky Covington.

For years, Covington has been known throughout Detroit not only as a jazz vocalist, but as a producer and curator dedicated to keeping Detroit’s jazz culture visible, working and alive. Through Sky Covington’s Preservation of Jazz, audiences have watched her create stages for countless Detroit musicians and vocalists while paying tribute to the legends who built the music.

At Jazz on Repeat, audiences also get the opportunity to experience Sky the performer.

Covington takes center stage with the Club Crescendo House Band, bringing the intimacy, storytelling and improvisational spirit of a true jazz-club performance into Richy’s Ballroom.

Her performance is not designed as background music for the evening. It is part of the show.

Jazz standards, blues, swing, poetry and Sky’s unmistakable way of communicating with an audience come together in a performance that reflects the very reason she created Preservation of Jazz in the first place: to allow people to experience jazz as living music—not something that belongs only to the past.

FROM PRODUCER TO CENTER STAGE

Detroit audiences may know Covington as the woman producing the show, introducing the artists, creating tributes and working behind the scenes. Jazz on Repeat gives her room to step from behind the production and spend more time doing what started the journey in the first place—singing jazz.

There is no velvet rope between the performer and the room here.

Sky talks to the audience. She tells stories. She lets the band stretch. Songs can breathe. The audience becomes part of the experience.

That freedom is intentional.

“We’re bringing back the feeling of a real night out,” says Covington. “I want people to hear the music, but I also want them to feel something. Jazz is conversation. It’s storytelling. Every night is different because the people in the room become part of what happens on that stage.”

And Richy’s Ballroom provides the kind of room where that can happen.

With its tables, dance floor and old-school ballroom atmosphere, Richy’s is quickly becoming another jewel in Detroit’s treasure box of music spaces—a place where people can dress up, gather around a table, order something to eat, laugh, listen and stay awhile.

LUCRETIA SAIN RETURNS BY POPULAR DEMAND

The October 14 show also welcomes back Lucretia Sain, returning by popular demand following her appearance at the September soft launch.

Sain joins an evening hosted by Detroit comedian Mike Bonner, with music from the Club Crescendo House Band, creating a floor-show-style experience where jazz, comedy and featured entertainment move together throughout the night.

This isn’t simply a concert where guests sit through one performance and go home.

Jazz on Repeat is a whole evening.

There’s live music. There’s comedy. There’s food. There are vendors. There are tables filled with friends.

And yes—it’s BYOB.

SWEETEST DAY STARTS EARLY

October 14 gives Detroit an opportunity to begin the Sweetest Day celebration before the weekend.

Individual admission is $25, and a table for eight is only $150, making the evening especially inviting for group outings and celebrations.
