Overview
The Whitney is pleased to announce the return of its popular Garden Parties for the summer season, along with the debut of a new Sunday afternoon event series featuring themed dining experiences and live music.
A long-standing warm-weather tradition in Detroit, the Whitney Garden Parties invite guests to enjoy an evening of live entertainment in a historic outdoor setting. This year’s series promises an expanded lineup and a fresh addition of Sunday programming designed to enhance the summer experience.
Detroit-based band, The Blueflowers, blossomed out of a songwriting collaboration between singer/lyricist Kate Hinote and guitarist/producer Tony Hamera. Both made an initial impression on the Detroit music scene in 2005 with the dream pop act, Ether Aura. When the two began experimenting with a more “Americana” sound, they decided to form a different band entirely, and in 2009 The Blueflowers were born. That Americana sound would prove to be just the beginning of their sonic journey.
Anyone following this band’s evolution through their five full length albums – Watercolor Ghost Town (2009), In Line with Broken-Hearted (2011), Stealing the Moon (2012), At the Edge of Disaster (2014), and Circus on Fire (2018) – along with their latest offerings, 2019’s Relapse EP and 2022’s Time Didn’t Matter EP, can hear a continuity in The Blueflowers’ unmistakable mood and sound, with an intentional insistence on edging each album towards something else entirely and a refusal to be bound by genre. From their early roots in Americana to their more current indie rock sound, The Blueflowers continue to grow and test new ground.
One primary way in which the newest material has subtly altered its routes is the addition of newest member and songwriter, Bryan Talaski, on bass guitar. With longtime core members Jim Faulkner (drums), David Johnson (guitar), and Erin Williams (keys, backing vocals, lyricist) still on board, The Blueflowers push steadily ahead with an easiness that only years of collaboration and experiences can give you and with no fear or expectations of where the path is going because now they can just enjoy the ride.
