My name is Hanan, from @detroithalaleats, and I’m here to tell you what you need to try in the Metro Detroit area that’s halal friendly. I have created a top 12 list of must-visit halal spots in the Metro Detroit area.
The Himalayan Flames | @thehimalayanflames
This hidden gem features a sizable menu of Indian, Nepali, and Tibetian dishes. Their dishes are full of flavor, and will always leave you wanting more. My favorite thing to order from there is their butter chicken and chicken biryani. They are also well known for their sizzling hot chicken tikka.
Modern Greek and Salad Bar | @moderngreekandsaladbar
Located in the new downtown area in West Dearborn, this popular restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. If you like Greek cuisine, this is the place to be. This place is one of my go-to spots, and I love their almond chicken salad. They give generous portions, and the staff is friendly!
The Great Commoner | @greatcommoner
This upscale boutique break cafe recently started serving dinner, and I love it. This newly opened cafe started just serving breakfast and brunch. Their exquisite menu is how fresh ingredients playfully dance on the modern palette in a boutique setting. I enjoyed their burger and pasta dishes.
Eureka Eatery | @eureka_eatery
They are known for their chicken sandwiches, and so many people drive 30+ minutes to try them. Don’t be fooled by their humble exterior (they are located inside a gas station), you’ll find a world of flavor when you take your first bite. The Nashville hot chicken sandwich is a fan favorite, and they also have monthly specials.
Sukhothai | @sukhothai.thai.halal
This newly opened restaurant specializes in authentic Thai cuisine. They have an extensive menu with many great choices. I enjoyed the different variety of dishes they had to offer, such as the chicken curry and the gaeng ga-ree.
Mocha Bistro | @mochabistro
Located in the heart of Dearborn, Mocha Bistro is the perfect fusion of American and Yemeni food. The restaurant’s name comes from the town of Mocha in Yemen. This fast-casual restaurant is known for its Mocha rolls. These mocha rolls are truly amazing. You can either choose from steak or chicken, along with thinly sliced onion and green peppers and cheese, then deep fried to perfection. You have to pair it with their famous mocha sauce.
Pine Coast Cafe | @pinecoastcafe
This local cafe recently opened back up. The sandy shores of Lake Michigan inspired this quiet, cozy coffee and sandwich shop. They have a full barista bar and the most delicious handcrafted sandwiches. Each sandwich is inspired by Lake Michigan and uniquely named. My favorite thing to get from here is The Ontario, which consists of Sous vide and seared chicken breast, Swiss cheese, turkey bacon, caramelized onions, and housemade chipotle on a grilled Detroit white.
Sheeba | @sheeba_restaurant
This restaurant combines the nobility of the place and the authenticity of Yemeni cuisine. They offer various savory dishes that are served in an upscaled home atmosphere. This restaurant has modern fusion cuisine that is full of flavor and always leaves you wanting more. They are most known for their lamb haneeth and their fahsah. The lamb haneeth is the ultimate Yemeni lamb roast. The fall-off-the-bone lamb is ultra tender and slowly roasted and served over rice. The fahsah is a traditional dish of shredded lamb and mashed potatoes, that is served bubbling hot in a clay bowl with fresh clay oven bread.
The Holy Cluck | @holycluck_
Holy Cluck started as a food truck and recently opened a brick-and-mortar in Dearborn Heights this year. Inside, you’ll find an industrial look, with a mural of their logo breaking through the wall. If you’re looking for a great chicken sandwich, Holy Cluck is the place to be. One of their newer sandwiches is the Hot Honey Butter. This sandwich hits your palette with both sweet and spicy flavors.
Hibachi Me | @hibachi_me313
This food truck specializes in hibachi. They offer five types of meat (chicken, steak, shrimp, salmon, and lobster tail). If you’re craving more than one type of meat, you can add up to three types of meat to a hibachi plate. I enjoyed the steak and the chicken hibachi. If you love hibachi, this is the place to be.
Brome Modern Eatery | @bromemoderneatery
When in Brome, I always love getting their burgers. Their burgers are made with 100% organic grass-fed beef. Brome’s menu offers a fresh take on American cuisine, packed with flavorful options like the Dantes Heaven burger topped with smoked turkey bacon, braised onion, cherry pepper relish, ghost pepper jack, and sweet habanero aioli, and the Impossible burger, a plant-based beef alternative that rivals the real thing.
Fratelli’s Pizza Cafe | @fratellispizzacafe
This hidden gem has a wide array of menu items that has something for everyone, from pizza to burgers and even tacos. Their double smash burger is so flavorful and juicy and is only available Thursday through Sunday. They have their delicious fish tacos available every Wednesday and Saturday. In 2016, they were awarded the best fish four years in a row.
