5 Detroit Museum Exhibitions to Check Out This Summer

Story by Katie Susko | Photos by Marvel courtesy of The Henry Ford; Wright Museum by Michelle and Chris Gerard; DIA courtesy of the DIA; Michigan Science Center

Our favorite museums have opened up to visitors again. And we’re particularly excited because there are quite a few exhibitions that we have been waiting to see!

From Marvel to Frida Kahlo, you’re going to want to take a few museum trips this summer in The D.

Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes at The Henry Ford

Through January 31, 2021

Marvel’s highly awaited exhibit at The Henry Ford is finally open! Featuring more than 300 artifacts of Marvel’s most iconic costumes, movie props and comic books, the exhibit also has immersive set pieces to bring the Marvel Universe to life. Discover how much of an influence Marvel has over our culture, and learn more about the stories behind some of your favorite super heroes.

Buy your tickets to the exhibit ahead of time on The Henry Ford’s website.

Queen: From the Collection of CCH Pounder at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History

Through August 2, 2020

Featuring pieces from the personal collection of actress CCH Pounder, all of the pieces in this exhibition were created by Africans, African Americans or from other parts of the diaspora. You will see sculptures, paintings and mixed media works in this limited-time Wright Museum exhibit.

Check out The Wright’s website for more details on COVID-19 safety at the museum.

Frida Kahlo & Salvador Dali at the Detroit Institute of Arts

Through January 3, 2021

The DIA is welcoming three beautiful and important works from Frida Kahlo and Salvador Dali. If you are an art lover, you know how big of a deal this is. The DIA will be showcasing them next to photographs from their own collection.

The DIA is instituting reserved timed tickets. Learn more about their current policies on their website.

Detroit’s Jazz Festival at the Detroit Historical Museum

The Detroit Jazz Festival is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year - even if the physical event has been cancelled. The Detroit Historical Museum is celebrating the occasion with exhibition of memorabilia and vintage posters of the event, which is the largest free jazz festival in the world.

Learn more about their museum safety practices and ticket information on their website.

Sun, Earth, Universe Exhibit at the Michigan Science Center

This one is for the little ones and their parents alike! The Michigan Science Center's special exhibit is presented in collaboration with NASA and the National Informal STEM Education Network, and explores planetary and space science in an easy way for family audiences to understand.
