Detroit 8: Fresh Out of the Oven Pies

Story by Danielle Alexander

Happy Pi Day from Detroit! With the approach of spring and new growth, we’re excited to gather round for afternoon picnics and out on the patio for a great meal with friends

In any case, a tasty sweet treat makes everything better and Detroit is always ready to serve up a delicious creation. Check out the list below for 8 places to get a great slice of pie in and around Detroit:

Achatz Handmade Pie Co.

Located in five metro Detroit cities including Beverly Hills, Chesterfield, Oxford, Shelby Township and Troy, Achatz Handmade Pie Co. is known for its “fresh, simple and delicious pies.” Whether you prefer fruit, cream or savory flavors, Achatz’s menu will undoubtedly fulfill your pie craving.

Astoria Pastry Shop

The Astoria Pastry Shop in both Greektown and Royal Oak offers more than 100 fine pastries, including pie, for customer enjoyment.

Avalon International Breads

Avalon International Breads on Willis Street in Detroit uses “100 percent organic flour in everything made, organic ingredients when possible, local ingredients whenever feasible and environmentally-friendly practices at every opportunity.” Pie is one of many options on its very popular menu.

Capers Steakhouse

In addition to its four cuts of “as much or as little as you wish” steak, many visitors also enjoy the apple pie at Detroit’s Capers on Gratiot either by itself or a La Mode for dessert.

Love’s Custard Pie

Customers have a choice of 26 pie flavors at Love’s Custard Pie on McNichols in Detroit. Food critic Andrew Zimmerman said, “It’s worth going [to Detroit] just for that.”

Sister Pie

Detroit’s Sister Pie on Kercheval Street serves “seasonally-driven” pie, cookies, breakfast and lunch. Open six days a week (closed on Sundays), Sister Pie experiments with nontraditional methods and flavor combinations such as Salted Maple and Ginger Peach Biscuit.

Sweet Potato Sensations

Sweet Potato Sensations‘ motto is “Here, every day is a holiday,” and after taking a look at their sweet menu, it really couldn’t be more accurate. Located in Detroit on Lahser, its products include sweet potato-flavored cookies, pie, coconut pie, pecan pie, cake, cheesecake, cobbler, muffins and ice cream.

Westview Orchards

Aside from spending a day at the cider mill, there’s another great reason to check out Westview Orchards – for their amazing, deep-dish pies. Pick up a classic cherry or apple, go crazy with caramel apple walnut, or grab a pie made with the fresh fruit of the season.
