The Monument to Joe Louis was a gift from Sports Illustrated Magazine to the city in 1986. It was created to honor the 1938 boxing match between Detroiter Joe Louis and German Max Schmeling. At the time, Nazi Germany was working to overthrow Austria and the events that followed lead to World War 2. Louis’ win was a perfect way to disrupt the Nazi’s propaganda about a superior Aryan race.
