Belle Isle Nature Center
Belle Isle Nature Center has recently undergone a $2.5 million makeover, and you will find many updated exhibits. Decorated animal enclosures allow guests to view animals such as turtles, mudpuppies, and snakes in their natural environments. You can view a replica Detroit sewer tunnel. A huge play structure complete with zipline allows children to enjoy the outdoors after visiting the indoor nature center. Visitors can view wildlife from an indoor viewing area. Deer, birds, rabbits, and squirrels are often spotted through the viewing area. Admission is free, outside of Belle Isle Park access.
Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center
Nature lovers will find themselves at home at Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center. Walk the trails, rent a pair of snowshoes, or bird watch. The center houses a variety of animals, including snakes, turtles, and frogs. You will also find a sensory table for the kids. There is a nearby playground and paved walking trails.
Red Oaks Nature Center
Red Oaks Nature Center offers both an indoor and outdoor component for nature lovers. Take a walk on the 1.3-mile paved trail, where you can bike, walk, or hike. Visit the animals inside the interpretive building. Children will be delighted by the sensory storybook trail.
Stage Nature Center
Calling all nature lovers! You will not be disappointed at this 100-acre nature preserve. Here you will find an interpretive building filled with reptiles, amphibians, a mastodon dig area, still life exhibits, library, and wildlife observation area. There are loop style trails of various lengths, so you can choose a short hike or a longer hike. The center houses five rehabilitated owls that live in an outdoor enclosure.
Sterling Heights Nature Center
Are you looking for a way to connect with nature? Head over to the Sterling Heights Nature Center where you will find reptiles, amphibians and a 900-gallon aquarium. Mounted birds and mammals are displayed throughout the center. You will also find walking trails nearby.
