11 Best Places to Catch the Sunset In Metro Detroit; Inside and Outside

Story by Lindsay Whitman Drewes

Watching the sunset over the Motor City is a beautiful way to close out a day in Detroit. There are a number of spots in Detroit where the view is especially spectacular.

It doesn’t matter whether it is summer or winter. There are excellent indoor and outdoor spots to watch the sun sink into the horizon. Keep reading to find the 11 best places to watch the sunset in Metro Detroit.

Belle Isle

Belle Isle tops the list because of the remarkable views of the water and the skyline. It's no surprise that your best view will be from Sunset Point on the island's western edge. The views of the water and the skyline are fabulous. This part of the island puts you in the perfect spot to watch the sun dip below the skyscrapers. You'll easily snap Insta-worthy pictures from this vantage point.

Lake St. Clair Metropark

Sit back and enjoy the view as you watch the sunset over Lake St. Claire. Head to the lake at around 8 pm on a summer evening and take some time to explore the area and find a perfect location to watch the sun slowly set over the horizon.

Detroit Princess Riverboat

Watch the sunset from the comfort of the Detroit Princess Riverboat. Weekend Sunset Dinner cruises feature a carving station with Prime Rib and Pork Tenderloin. There is also a buffet with a variety of entrees, pasta, and vegetables and a cash bar.

Tin Roof Detroit

Grab a cocktail and head to the roof patio to watch the sun fade over the landscape.

Detroit Riverfront

What could be more perfect than an evening stroll on the riverfront while the sky bursts into a cacophony of orange, and red, and pink? It's a perfectly magical way to enjoy a Detroit sunset.

Kensington Metropark

Kensington Metropark is peaceful and picture-perfect any time of day, but it's incredibly gorgeous at sunset. Take the bike trail along the lake and watch as the sun slips below the trees and the sky turns a deep shade of pink.

Henry Ford Estate

The estate grounds are open until dusk each evening, so you can watch the sunset and then head home. One unique design feature is that on the summer solstice, the sun sets at the meadow's endpoint. If you don't happen to make it on June 21, don't worry, there's a dazzling view year-round.

Newburg Lake

Take Hines Drive around Newburg Lake to find the perfect spot to watch the sunset. There are many good vantage points over the lake, so drive or walk until you find the ideal place.

Riverside Kayak Connection

Riverside Kayak Connection is the Detroit area's premier paddling shop. Rent a kayak and head out in the evening to watch a stunning color change across the sky and over the water. Check the schedule for availability of sunset tours.

Highlands Detroit

Highlands Detroit is the spot for incredible indoor sunset views of Detroit. Perched on the 71st and 72nd floors of the GM Renaissance Center, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the city as the sun sets while dining, socializing, and enjoying the bar.
