Take 5 | Curt Novara

Story by Wensdy Von Buskirk | Photos by Nick Hagen

When you spend a day in Metro Detroit with out-of-towners, where do you take them? Why?

Curt Novaro, Owner/Operator, Woodward Guitar Co.

“There is always an aura of excitement and fun when you are in the city, no matter if you have been living here for more than 20 years or you are a visitor. For me, my love of Detroit has no rival, so when my visitors come around, I always have a whole lot of fun lined up for them.

Our first stop is Comerica Park, because playing hooky from work for an afternoon to catch up with a Detroit Tigers game definitely tops the list.

Along with a game, I usually take my guests to experience a world of craftsmanship from the 1920s at the Meadow Brook estate tour. They are definitely going to be wowed by the designs of the past century.

True lovers of the guitar know that when you step into Detroit Guitar, you definitely feel like rock royalty. I always add this spot to the list of places to visit.

Food is so important to me, just as it is to my guests. Dinner in metro Detroit wouldn’t be complete without a taste of Buddy’s pizza. This Detroit-style square pizza is always a hit with lots of high fives around the table.

Nothing beats wrapping up an evening like live music at PJ’s Lager House, where performers like singer-songwriter Jake McArthur soothe the soul. This is definitely one spot that allows you to feel the beauty of Detroit’s music.”

Woodward Guitar Co.

A few years back, Woodward Guitar Co. founder Curt Novara had an idea about a guitar. The Detroit-area detective and music man wanted to build one that stood out, was different — that would give him a way to make a positive out of all the negative surrounding the city he loved. His Woodward Model Guitar does just that, hand-carved and carefully constructed out of reclaimed Douglas fir from deconstructed homes in Detroit. Each instrument is custom-built with a bit of soul from the city.
