Take 5 | Roslyn Karamoko

Story by Wensdy Von Buskirk | Photos by Jennie Warren

When you spend a day in Metro Detroit with out-of-towners, where do you take them? Why?

Roslyn Karamoko, Founder of Detroit is the New Black

“The first place I’d go is Belle Isle. I think it is the most beautiful park I’ve ever seen. The view of Detroit is spectacular, and you can also see Windsor. It’s just visually stunning.

Second stop, my store Détroit Is the New Black. It’s downtown on Woodward Avenue so it’s sort of in the old downtown shopping strip. I would show off our in-house private label and our other curated local brands and artwork so you could get a souvenir of your time in Detroit.

I also love Kresge Court at the DIA (Detroit Institute of Arts). It’s just a beautiful space to work, grab lunch and see the international collections that the DIA houses.

To eat, I would go to Savannah Blue, a great family-owned soul food restaurant in the heart of the city. It has live music some nights, a cool vibe. It’s laid-back and the food is really good.

Also, the N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art. It’s a gallery in the Midtown art district/Wayne State area. It hosts small concerts, different dance classes, and there’s a great little vegetarian restaurant in the center. It’s a nice way to see what’s culturally happening in the area.”
