Detroit 3.0—New Age Travel for the Tech-Savvy
Story by Bryan Shelmon
Detroit has always been a city driving society forward. So, when it comes to the latest tech, the Motor City is already on top of it! Loading Detroit 3.0! A futuristic way to experience one of America’s most iconic cities.
When most people think about Detroit, they think about the historical Motown, automobile history, and architectural marvels still decorating the skyline. However, Detroit is undergoing a technology resurgence to give tech-savvy travelers a taste of the future.
Here are our favorite picks pioneering a new way to visit Detroit.
Plan your trip with Artificial Intelligence
Planning your trip to Detroit? The better question to ask yourself is, what ISN’T there to do in Detroit? We’ve got it all—exploring our iconic auto culture, immersing into the thriving art scene, river cruises, outdoor activities, entertainment, and loads more. It’s impossible to squeeze everything into one itinerary, so take advantage of AI technology to help you narrow down the things you’ll love most!
News flash—the age of artificial intelligence is here, and it’s already taking over travel planning. AI trip planning tools are available from popular travel providers like Tripadvisor, Expedia, and Kayak that can tailor itineraries to you. They work by sharing details about yourself, such as your trip duration, where you’re staying, and what you’re interested in (i.e., History, architecture, art, nightlife, etc.). These AI tools will auto-generate your customized travel plan. They work like chatbots, so it feels like having a conversation with a personal travel agent—except it’s all computerized and in the palm of your hand.
If AI is still too futuristic and you prefer to remain part of the scrolling generation, you can always find tons of Detroit trip itinerary ideas on our Tik-Tok.
Fly with ‘Parallel Reality’ Digital ID technology at DTW Airport
The Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) is the main hub for air travel in Michigan—and one of the busiest in the country! With nearly 30 million travelers passing through its terminals every year, what a perfect place to glimpse the future of traveling to Detroit.
Delta Airlines hub in the McNamara Terminal has a futuristic surprise for jet-setters en route to their next destination. Introducing ‘Parallel Reality!’ This massive screen features a specially designed digital ID technology that displays your flight details—and you’re the only one who can see it!
It works by tracking your ticket and projecting the flight information only to that designated spot where you’re standing. It can show up to 100 different displays, but you’ll only see the details corresponding to you. It’s quite the futuristic way to see where your gate is.

Drive the EV-charging road in Corktown
Wireless charging is an unparalleled level of convenience for any device. So, what if you can do the same with your charging vehicle? Detroit isn’t finished yet with pushing the envelope on auto tech as it recently revealed America’s first EV-charging road in the Corktown neighborhood.
Soon, visitors renting EV cars during their trip will be able to keep them charged while driving around Detroit. A quarter-mile section of Corktown’s 14th Street was upgraded with receivers beneath the asphalt interacting with your car battery as you drive over it. It’s currently in the testing stage with Electreon, who designed the technology before rolling it out to even more streets.
We’ve come a long way since Woodward Avenue became the first paved road in America in the early 1900s.
Futuristic Exhibitions and Events
Thanks to technology, there’s a new way to experience Detroit’s most popular attractions. Our museums have made progressive leaps into the future of how we interact with exhibitions.
Check out the latest exhibitions at the Michigan Science Center for a chance to interact with augmented reality. The Above and Beyond exhibition is on display until September 8, 2024, where you can experience what it’s like to blast off into space in a shuttle to Mars. Attend the annual International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) every fall for updates on the next generation of robotics technology. The 2023 North American International Auto Show unveiled a design for one of the world’s first flying cars—who knows what will be featured in the next!
