Tours & Togetherness | Reasons To Love The D

As if we need to list more reasons to love our city … but why not? Here are a few places, faces, items and events that make Detroiters all happy and tingly inside.

Cruise the Great Lakes Initiative

A few years back, the Cruise the Great Lakes Initiative was born to help boost tourism on and around the Great Lakes. Since then, small passenger cruise ships, some accommodating fewer than 100 guests, are out and about in droves on Detroit-area waterways, showing off our shorelines to guests both domestic and international. Some cruise lines embark/disembark from downtown’s Port of Detroit on the Detroit River, which feeds Lake Erie, or include the city as a tour stop on several of their multinight adventures. In all, here’s another collaborative effort further turning the tide on tourism in The D.

Coriander Kitchen and Farm by Bill Bowen

Coriander Kitchen & Farm

It’s kinda cool how farmers Alison Heeres and Gwen Meyer have put their spin on the farm-to-table concept by melding kayaking with their culinary chops. The two have been practicing farm-to-table catering, sharing eats from their urban farm near Detroit’s Eastern Market, for a while now. They went their own way when they partnered up with Detroit River Sports and took their menus to the former Fisherman’s Marina. Now Coriander’s paddle-to-table dinners complement Detroit River Sports’ kayak tours through the Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood. Coming this spring: their very own brick-and-mortar restaurant right inside the marina.

Rebel Nell by Nick Hagen

Rebel Nell | York Project

Rebel Nell and York Project have long been on this magazine’s radar. In fact, we’ve showcased Rebel Nell’s graffiti jewelry and streetwear brand York Project’s apparel as Detroit-style souvenirs that support good causes. Now the two social enterprises have decided to share a retail space in Detroit’s Northwest Goldberg neighborhood. Rebel Nell will be using some of the square footage to help develop customer service and digital literacy skills for its workforce — which is largely made up of Detroiters who previously struggled for employment. And for each item York Project sells at the new location, a homeless person will receive a donation kit that includes necessity items like socks and water. One location now serving two well-deserving operations.
