Must-try Vegan Restaurants and Vegan Meals in Detroit
Story by Kayla Putz
We sat down with one of our favorite vegans and host of our series Eats in The D, Noni, to talk about Detroit’s recent buzz as a Top 10 Vegan-Friendly city in the U.S.
“Detroit is gaining a reputation as an oasis of vegan cuisine.” And that’s straight from the source (PETA, if you’re curious). They suggest hitting up Detroit Vegan Soul, Rocky Road’s Brew and Nosh Pit. We wanted to dive a little deeper — here are some recommendations for the best vegan dishes in the city from our girl Noni:
Best Vegan Restaurants and Vegan Meals in Detroit
El Asador Steakhouse
El Asador Steakhouse is an easygoing spot for Mexican grilled meats and seafood, plus fresh, table-side guacamole. But don’t let the name or description fool you, El Asador caters to all dietary needs and has a range of options for their vegan friends. Noni recommends the veggie fajita – sizzling vegetables served with guacamole, pico de gallo and your choice of tortillas.
Ale Mary’s Beer Hall
Ale Mary’s Beer Hall is a fun, Royal Oak restaurant located in downtown Royal Oak. They have an entire menu dedicated to their vegan customers and the options are endless – they even have vegan milkshakes, cocktails, beer and wine. Noni’s faves are the buffalo cauliflower and chili cheese fries.
Cacao Tree Cafe
Cacao Tree Café in Royal Oak specializes in vegan and raw foods, offering a menu full of wraps, salads, juices and smoothies. Their raw burrito is a No. 1 favorite – it’s a fresh collard wrap stuffed with taco “meat” (nuts/seeds/spices), cashew sour cream, pico de gallo, guacamole and shredded romaine lettuce.
La Feria Spanish Tapas
La Feria is an upbeat restaurant offering traditional Spanish small plates, wine and cocktails. They offer a variety of vegan and vegetarian-friendly dishes. Noni likes the asparagus, served with olive oil red bell pepper and garlic sauce, as well as the grilled portobello paired with sauce of parsley, lemon and garlic.
Inn Season Café
Inn Season Café is a Royal Oak restaurant staple that has been serving up locally sourced vegetarian and kosher fare since 1981. Noni’s go-to is the tempeh burger, which is served on a whole grain bun with vegan cheese, sautéed onions, lettuce and tomato.
Maru Sushi
Maru rolls some of Detroit’s best sushi right downtown. They have an entire section of their menu dedicated to vegetarians. The Simply Green roll is a safe bet, filled with cucumber avocado, kampyo, mixed greens and Maru dressing. Noni says the Rio Grande roll is where it’s at. It’s stuffed with avocado, asparagus, red pepper, tomato, serrano pepper, guacamole and pico de gallo – delish.
Seva
Seva’s Detroit location takes up shop behind the N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art. Seva offers some of the best vegan dishes in town, but Noni suggests ordering the tempeh burger with a side of peanut-kale salad.
Vegginini’s Paradise Café
To sum it up, Vegginini’s in Detroit is where vegans find happiness. Seriously, take it from Noni, she raves about this place. Her fav is the vegan lasagna. They offer a variety of subs, sandwiches and fries galore.
Detroit Vegan City. We’re happy to add that to our list of accolades. Now come and check it out for yourself.
