Eastern Market is known as the largest historic market in the country that celebrates “the freshest, most wholesome fruits, vegetables, specialty foods, art and music, all undeniably Detroit.” However, many do not realize the retail options that exist both in and around its 4.5 acres.
Retail Inside Eastern Market
1. Beatnik Vibe
Handmade hats, headbands and mittens are just three of many (warm!) products you can find at Beatnik Vibe, which stocks bohemian-style goods from Nepal, Ghana, India, Guatemala, Thailand, Ecuador, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Kenya and Mali.
2. Detroit Mercantile Co.
Like mercantile and general stores from the past, Detroit Mercantile Co. is a store that strives to find the “highest quality products from our city, our state and across the country.” The vintage items are guaranteed to be both authentic and well researched, so customers know exactly what they are buying.
3. Division Street Boutique (Detroit Hustles Harder)
4. I Club Detroit
The name “I Club Detroit” is said to signify an “enthusiasm for Detroit’s music scene,” specifically its techno and electronic music roots. It should come as no surprise then that screen-printed techno, house and electronic music-related t-shirts and tanks are sold at I Club Detroit, located within Eastern Market.
5. Pure Shea Store
Pure Shea Store is a must-visit for those in need of natural Shea Butter soaps and other bath products at affordable prices. Shea Butter is known as a natural healing product, one that is said to be great for cuts, bruises and burns.
6. Touch Body Works
Founded in 2012, this Michigan-made company does not believe in artificial fragrances or colors and prides itself on being a “pioneer in skin care.” Touch Body Works offers an array of skin care collections, even including one for gentlemen.
7. Two Stix 5 Stones
If you are looking for original handmade knit fashion-forward items, accessories and art, then you need to stop by Two Stix 5 Stones. Creations sold here are limited edition and one-of-a-kind.
8. Wolverine Fur Co.
Since 1989, Wolverine Fur Co. has “met the fashion needs of discerning women and men around the world”. It sells both new and vintage furs and offers on-site alterations, fur appraisals and fur styling, cleaning and storage services.
Retail Nearby Eastern Market
9. City Bird
Located on Canfield, City Bird carries housewares, jewelry, paper goods, apparel, accessories and home décor by hundreds of independent artists and designers; they also feature work from Detroit, specifically Great Lakes-themed items, and other “Rust Belt” cities.
If you like City Bird, you’ll also enjoy its sister store: Nest. Located only steps away, it carries gifts and provisions for the home including candles, soaps, terrariums, bar and kitchen accessories and home decor.
11. Run Detroit
You cannot possibly succeed at a New Years Resolution of getting fit without the proper shoes, so why not visit Run Detroit? Also located on Canfield, the store is owned by runners who offer specialty products, educational resources and training opportunities to help you “achieve your goals”.
Whether you are into handcrafted watches, bicycles, leather goods, journals or just want to check out what all the recent hype is about, Shinola has become quite the retail attraction for both Detroiters and tourists alike.
