Overview
Philip Glass’s Satyagraha turns Mahatma Gandhi’s early years in South Africa into an opera about truth and nonviolent resistance. The score’s sweeping, repeating patterns frame each act with three figures who shaped Gandhi’s thinking or legacy: Leo Tolstoy, Rabindranath Tagore and Martin Luther King Jr. Detroit Opera’s staging, directed by James Blaszko, offers a distinctive overhead view: all seats are in the balcony, where the production’s visual and sonic design can be seen as a panoramic whole.
