Overview

(Sub)Surface showcases the work of thirteen respected members of the Detroit art community, with a focus on placing pieces to ensure access for individuals who are visually impaired. All works within the exhibition will be accessible through a variety of senses and at least two different stimuli. Participants include Tony Whlgn, April Smith, Jason Johnson, Mary Ceimerych, Dr. Shawn Forman, Roxy Eaton, Erin Palmore, Rachel Banks, Rae Dobbins, Simon Anton, Miriam Uhura, Ashanti Africana, and Deja Jones.

(Sub)surface is a space for exploring the arts beyond visuals and offers sighted people an opportunity to encounter different forms of engagement within the arts. This exhibition is open to individuals of all ages and people of varied abilities. At this show, the public is allowed to physically engage with all pieces. Other senses, such as auditory and smell, will also be used.

Programming for the event will extend throughout the Month of Design and into October.

The program includes an opening reception, artist talk, workshop, and a closing reception, including a short documentary of the process.
