When it comes to birthdays, why only celebrate on one day when you can be the birthday queen or king all weekend?
Detroit is the perfect destination to spend your birthday – there are plenty of activities, restaurants and museums to enjoy. Add these suggestions to your itinerary to make your birthday weekend in downtown Detroit unforgettable!
Where to Get Pampered
Detroit Blows
To kick off your birthday weekend, “get pampered” should definitely be first on your to-do list. Detroit Blows is a chic “non-toxic finishing salon” that features blowouts and beauty services located on 1232 Library Street with parking validation at the Z-Lot. The fantastic part about getting your hair coiffed here is that a portion of the proceeds from blowouts and the retailed items goes to supporting young female entrepreneurs and women reentering the workforce in Detroit.
After getting a wash, a thorough head massage, and a blowout – you are ready to show off your new hairdo and birthday glow while taking Instagram-worthy pictures by the gorgeous salon interior.
Detroit Barbers
If you have shorter hair or a blowout just isn’t for you, grab a seat at one of the two Detroit Barbers locations in Corktown or Ferndale. These wonderful barbers offer “a legendary haircut, trim or shave with an old-school feel.” Need some haircut inspiration for your new birthday hairdo? Check out some styles on their website so you can be ready to take on your birthday with a new look!
What To Do: Tours of Detroit
Bike & Brew Tour with Motor City Brew Tours
If you are looking for a fun outdoor activity that will help you discover new places in Detroit then join Steve and Laura on a Bike & Brew Tour. The Murals and Public Art tour is a 10-mile leisurely bike stroll, suited for all levels of riders. These experienced guides take you to unique places in the city that you might have overlooked while driving. If you don’t have a bike, don’t worry, they have you covered. You can rent bikes (helmets are included) right off their ticketing page or use a MoGo bike. The bike tour ends with a couple well-deserved brews, and some tasty sandwiches (included in the price of admission). Motor City Brew Tours not only offers bike tours: they also offer guided bus tours, walking tours, and private tours, all of which vary in subject matter! Be sure to check their page for the latest tours being offered. Cheers!
Diamond Jack’s River Tours
Finding an activity the whole family can participate in can sometimes be difficult, but the Diamond Jack’s River Tour is an easy pick. Cruising on the Detroit River is always a great idea because the Windsor–Detroit skyline is a sight that never ceases to amaze. The Diamond Jack’s River Tour offers sightseeing tours Thursday to Sunday at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at different points of departure. The rich history between these border cities are highlighted by the different locations the tour passes by – including the Bob-Lo Amusement Park Pavilion Building, the Amherstburg Riverfront, Fort Malden National Historic Site, the Detroit Fireboat, the Ambassador Bridge and many others. So get ready to sit back and enjoy a relaxing cruise with the family – and don’t forget to pack the sunscreen!
Where to Eat in Detroit
Townhouse
If you’re gearing up for a night out with friends, then Townhouse is a great choice to start your evening. In the heart of downtown Detroit, a live DJ kicks off the party while you enjoy any drink from their extensive Libation Library. For dinner, they have small plates to share amongst friends. If you’re feeling more peckish, a peek at their selection of large plates might be what you’re looking for. The large plates feature, seafood, meat, vegan, gluten-free, and vegetarian options. For the Townhouse birthday queen or king treatment, make sure you order a “Cake, Cake, Cake.”
Cliff Bell’s
Located on 2030 Park Ave, Cliff Bell’s offers a truly retro dining and entertainment experience and has the perfect atmosphere for a relaxed birthday night out. The restaurant’s wooden panel facade and marquee lights make it hard to miss amidst the traditional concrete and brick. When you enter the club, you can easily forget you are in 2018 as the leather seats, wall murals, and concave ceiling teleport you back in time to the bustling Motown era.
While you enjoy the smooth sounds of jazz and some of their signature cocktails, browse Cliff Bell’s food menu – they have an amazing appetizer selection and mouth-watering entrees. I highly recommend the Fresh Burrata and the Truffle Fries. You will not be disappointed!
If you would like to make a reservation, please call in advance or check out their website for more information. You’ll be happy to note that there is both street parking and a parking lot across the venue.
