7 Chocolate Shops in Metro Detroit
Bon Bon Bon
Bon Bon Bon is an award-winning, colorful, and delicious chocolate shop with multiple locations around Detroit (fun fact: it opened in the back of a coney island in 2014).
Find them in downtown Detroit on Parker’s Alley, at their Midtown storefront, or on Saturdays at Eastern Market
(shed 5). Further afield, they have a location inside the Rustbelt Market in Ferndale, and even a couple spots in Ann Arbor.
All of the chocolate here is handcrafted, ground in Ecuador, and comes in truly unique flavors. Try the “salty sap” (with crystallized maple butter) or “better butter crunch” (with Detroit-made potato chips and sea salt) for a taste of Pure Michigan!
Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory
You have probably heard of Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory – a popular international franchise of chocolate shops. There is one location in downtown Detroit that is very convenient for visitors. Come here for chocolate truffles, caramels, toffee, and premium dark chocolates. Of course, you can also mix and match your own box of chocolates!
Baobob Fare
Baobob Fare is an up-and-coming Detroit restaurant that specializes in East African food. The owners have even been nominated as 2024 finalists for the James Beard Awards! So, what does that have to do with chocolate?
Last year, they launched their line of ethically sourced, sustainable, bean-to-bar East African chocolates. Their chocolate brand is called Soko and all chocolate bars are single-origin and sourced from Tanzania.
This is definitely one for the dark chocolate lovers. Try the “shokola” flavor, which is a simple 70% dark chocolate, or the “shokola y’ karanga” which is 70% dark chocolate with spicy caramelized peanuts.
Quix Chocolate
Over in Ferndale, pay a visit to Quix Chocolate, a boutique Belgian chocolatier. This LGBTQ+ and Belgian-owned shop serves up truffles and confections hand-made in metro Detroit.
You’ll notice that the chocolate here is not only drool-worthy but also comes in intricate and unique shapes. Try a “homerun” which is a baseball cap-shaped chocolate filled with whipped cream and vanilla, or the “harvest corn” which is a yellow corn-shaped chocolate filled with creamy hazelnut and cornflake crunch. Many of the chocolates are also hand-painted.
Wow!Cacao by Birmingham Chocolate
Wow!Cacao is another option for chocoholics in Ferndale. The chocolate treats here are notorious for their vibrant colors (think: neon swirls or splatter-painted to look like a starry night) and unusual flavor combinations (often inspired by cocktails and featuring liquers).
Chocolates here are handcrafted and hand-painted, and all made from secret recipes using only natural ingredients. Of all the chocolate shops in Detroit, this is where to come for an ultra-colorful box.
Tres Bon Chocolate
Tres Bon Chocolate is a boutique chocolatier located in Dearborn, in metro Detroit. All of the chocolate here is made in the Belgian style, with ingredients imported from Lebanon.
You can order uncommon Lebanese flavors like pistachio and rose petals. They also offer special bespoke packaging ideal for gift-giving, such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Eid, engagement presents, baby showers, personalized names, and more.
Dwaar Chocolate
Last but certainly not least is Dwaar Chocolate, an artisan chocolate maker located in Keego Harbor. Their specialty here is handcrafted bean-to-bar chocolate, meaning there is a special focus paid to where the cacao is sourced from and the process of making the chocolate.
All the actual sorting, roasting, grinding, and tempering takes place in Michigan. Their current chocolate bars are all made from beans sourced from countries like Mexico, Ecuador, Guatemala, Fiji, Madagascar, and India.
