Detroit 10: Comfort Food in Detroit

December is no time to start a diet — save that for January’s New Year’s resolution! Instead, spend this month checking out local restaurants and devouring the delicious comfort foods they have to offer.

The Top Comfort Food Restaurants in Detroit

Norma G's

Norma G’s is a former food truck that serves delicious comfort foods like jerk chicken sliders and macaroni and cheese. This heavy pescatarian menu also shows love to scrumptious vegan options.

What to order: The curry chicken or curry goat – you won't be disappointed.

The Melting Pot

This is the place to have fun with your food. Pick up a fondue fork and cook your own shrimp, or pinch strawberries by the stem and dip them in rich chocolate concoctions. The award-winning cheeses in their fondue are melted to order and served with artisan breads, seasonal fruits and veggies for dipping.

What to order: The signature Wisconsin Cheddar – melted with lager beer, garlic and spices.

Antonio's Italian Cuisine

Dine in a relaxed atmosphere that features house-made pastas and Old World favorites, such as tripe and polenta.

What to order: Pasta – create your own signature dish by choosing the type and sauce you'd like.

Green Dot Stables

Corktown is home to this unique restaurant that offers more than 20 different types of sliders and an array of sides. Using many local products and beverages, Green Dot Stables is sure to satisfy any appetite.

What to order: Fries – choose from truffle and herb, venison chili cheese, le poutine, cajun or regular.

PizzaPapalis

The first PizzaPapalis opened in 1986 in Detroit, and they've been going strong ever since. There are now nine restaurants throughout Michigan offering pizza, superior soups, crispy salads and decadent desserts, including s the "Deep Dish Chocolate Cookie."

What to order: Chicago-style deep-dish pizza – choose from one of their specialties or create your own.

Beans & Cornbread

This award-winning soul food restaurant fuses southern roots with an epicurean influence in traditional favorites and low country cuisine. In addition to a unique upscale dining experience, it has a quaint wine and martini bar named Sidebar and a private event space called Red Velvet for parties of up to 50 guests.

What to order: Mama's Meat Loaf – smothered in skillet gravy.

Kid Rock's Made in Detroit

This new restaurant attached to Little Caesars Arena serves all kinds of Northern and Southern comfort and soul food favorites, plus live music year round. From mac n' cheese to shrimp and grits, you will find little hints of Detroit ingredients throughout the menu.

What to order: Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich – as close to the southern original that you can find in Detroit.

Jacoby's German Biergarten

If you're looking for the German take on comfort food, Jacoby's is the place to go. Eat all of the schnitzel, potato pancakes and spaetzle you can manage.

What to order: The Jager Schnitzel is a crowd favorite – served with traditional hunter sauce and potato pancakes.
