7 Metro Detroit Restaurants for Avocado Toast Lovers

Story by Danielle Alexander | Photos by Lisa Fotios from Pexels

After becoming a top breakfast trend in the last few years, it’s no surprise that avocado toast has a cult-like following.

Whether you believe the dish is best kept simple or you’re looking to experiment, these metro Detroit restaurants serve all you could avo want in (er, on) toast.

Best Restaurants for Avocado Toast Lovers

1. Avalon Café & Bakery

Since 1997, Avalon has been providing 100 percent organic flour in every menu item with a “promise of artisan breads, sinful sweets and vegan baked goods.” No matter what you order, you won’t be disappointed, but a customer favorite is definitely the avocado toast. At Avalon, you can enjoy smashed avocado, tahini, cucumber, chili flakes, sea salt and olive oil, all on a slice of organic farm bread. Need more protein? No worries! You can add a farm egg to this breakfast item.

2. Bobcat Bonnie’s

Bobcat Bonnie’s mission is to provide “high-quality, inviting service within a clean, fun and welcoming atmosphere while serving fresh, upscale food at a friendly price.” Its avocado toast, served on Saturdays and Sundays between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., is just one example of this.

Listed as a vegan brunch menu item, Bobcat Bonnie’s avocado toast includes avocado and goat cheese spread, basil, tomatoes, dill and avocado served on toasted bread.

3. Central Kitchen & Bar

Serving contemporary American cuisine in a casual and welcoming environment, Central Kitchen & Bar’s executive chef gives a new spin to the classics, “upgrading them with inventive taste combinations using local and seasonal ingredients.”

With multigrain toast, avocado, grilled artichokes, red onion, capers, grape tomatoes, arugula and goat cheese, this is one of the most popular items served at Central Kitchen. Still hungry? The restaurant’s bacon, chicken sausage, lyonnaise potatoes or even fresh fruit side dishes would pair well with the avocado toast.

4. First Watch

Known as a “place for good stories and great food,” First Watch’s three metro Detroit locations offer made-from-scratch menu. Added bonus: everything served can be made to order, including its avocado toast.

First Watch’s avocado toast is described as “thick-cut whole grain toast topped with fresh smashed avocado, EVOO, lemon and Maldon sea salt,” served with two basted eggs. If you’re a coffee drinker, you will not only receive a cup but an entire pot of First Watch’s Project Sunrise coffee, along with complementary newspapers and WiFi access, to accompany this favorite breakfast dish.

5. Folk Detroit

Located in Corktown, Folk specializes in seasonal, made-from-scratch comfort foods and healthful beverages. An extension of The Farmer’s Hand, Folk uses fresh ingredients to “create nourishing, seasonal fare inspired by recipes that have been passed down through generations.”

Its avocado toast recipe includes avocado, beet hummus, toasted benne seed and pea shoots on your choice of seeded wheat or sourdough. This is a vegan option; however, you could “take it up a notch” and add bacon and egg.

6. O.W.L.

Serving a Mexican-American menu, O.W.L. is a breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night staple in Royal Oak. In fact, many visit this just to indulge in their avocado toast, which includes a hard-boiled egg, radishes, carrots, cilantro and the option of seared ahi tuna all on grilled sesame bread.

7. Rochester Brunch House

Located in the heart of downtown Rochester, Rochester Brunch House not only prides itself on using the freshest ingredients possible but also offers 83 menu items under $10. Only a couple dollars more, the avocado toast includes avocado, tomato, bacon, an over medium egg and goat cheese on Challah toast.

The large amount of avocado toast that freelance writer Danielle Alexander consumes in a week is pit-iful; nevertheless, it just never seems to get old to her.
