Take in the Last Bit of Holiday Cheer
Take advantage of the final days of the holiday season by checking out the Kwanza Kinara in Capitol Park, Menorah in the D at Cadillac Square, and the massive tree at Campus Martius.
Through January 5, the Holly Trolley can take you to those spots and more highlights downtown, including Columbia Street’s Winter Wonderland and the Detroit Winter Markets, where you can shop at more than a dozen small businesses offering unique goods.
Warm Up Inside
When you’ve had enough of the frosty temps, it’s time for all the indoor activities you’ve been meaning to try.
After your hike around Belle Isle, stick around to explore some more. The newly renovated Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory is finally ready to dazzle visitors after a two-year closure. The 100-year-old greenhouse and botanical garden houses exotic plants that need warmer environments, which makes it a cozy haven. Near by are the Belle Isle Aquarium and Dossin Great Lakes Museum.
You can see Detroit’s famous architecture around every corner, but get a closer look on a guided tour. City Tours Detroit offers an insider’s view of the Guardian Building, 313 Presents will pull back the curtains at the Fox Theater, and the Fisher building and the Masonic also offer behind-the-scenes peeks.
Get Outside
Detroit may not be known for its outdoor winter activities, but January is a great time to get outside.
Even after the holiday cheer has waned, the Rink at Campus Martius Park presented by Visit Detroit continues all month. Rent skates or bring your own and enjoy the crisp air while taking in the stunning downtown Detroit views seven days a week.
The riverfront is open year round but the cold months put Valade Park in the spotlight as it hosts the Fire and Ice Festival January 10-12. The medieval-themed party features turkey legs and Renaissance Fair characters. Thaw yourself by the huge bonfires while you enjoy the ice carving contest.
The Detroit Zoo may be quieter this time of year, but many animals are still active. It’s prime time for polar bears, penguins, and their chilly weather loving comrades. A mix of indoor and outdoor attractions make the zoo a perfect January outing.
If you haven’t experienced the peacefulness of a snow covered Belle Isle, put it on your winter bucket list. Hike the loop around Detroit’s 982-acre island park or venture into the interior. Enjoy the views of wildlife, freighters, and international skylines.
Out and About in January
Detroit has a big to-do list this month! Don’t miss out on these great events.

The show is a must for car buffs and fun for even the laymen among us.
A Night on the Town
Enjoy a classic date night with dinner and a show this month. Whether you’re looking to share some laughs or sing with your favorite musical acts, the live entertainment options won’t disappoint. Wright Museum of African American History. Visiting comedians include Cedric the Entertainer, Kevin Hart, Frank Black, and Charlie Berens.
Add reservations at your favorite restaurant downtown to your evening plans. Or, get dinner and a show in one place at Cliff Bell’s, Baker’s Keyboard Lounge, Savoy, or Aretha’s Jazz Cafe.

It's Game Time!
The sports scene in Detroit is heating up this January. The Red Wings and Pistons will play their regular season games, while the Lions battle it out in the playoffs. Game days always bring extra energy to downtown and this month is sure to be electric.
Looking for something unique? Check out Detroit Roller Derby!
If you’d rather participate in the action, try fowling, feather bowling, traditional bowling, or the newest old craze: rollerskating.
Family Fun
January is the perfect time to sign up for a Visit Detroit digital pass to save money and earn prizes while you're out and about in Detroit. You can use your Explore Detroit Pass to experience history, art, and varied hands-on activities like yoga and tie dye.
See exhibits like Hockey: Faster than Ever at The Henry Ford, visit the Charles H. Wright Museum (celebrating 60 years!), take the little ones (and the young at heart) through the Streets of Old Detroit at the Detroit Historical Museum. Pewabic Pottery and the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant Museum are just two of the smaller cultural institutions you can visit with the pass. Or try some hands-on crafting at Detroit Dye House. The options are endless in January in Detroit!
