When the temperatures soar in Detroit, there’s nothing more refreshing than an expertly crafted summer drink served up in a memorable setting. From the Detroit River views to hidden tiki patios, we’ve collected the best ways to cool off as the mercury rises:
Andiamo Detroit Riverfront
Get the Chantellini, a refreshing mix of gin, St. Germaine, fresh lime and cranberry juices. It’s all shaken up and served with a slice of orange peel. Be sure to grab a patio table at Andiamo Detroit Riverfront.
Chartreuse Kitchen & Cocktails
There’s a reason Negroni’s have their own week. At Chartreuse Kitchen & Cocktails the fantastic staff makes a Summer Negroni that’s as celebratory as it is summery. Balancing Burnt Orange Death’s Door gin, Campari, yellow chartreuse and Bonal Gentiane Quina, an aromatized apertif wine, this beauty is best served ice cold.
Grey Ghost‘s Will Lee suggests you try the Pink Cadillac, a light, refreshing summer ode to the Motor City itself. No average pink drink here, it’s made with El Jimador Reposado tequila, Aperol, fresh watermelon, grapefruit, chamomile, lemon and peychaud bitters.
There’s something magical about the friendly patios of Ferndale. Add a top-notch tiki bar like Honi Honi, tucked just behind The Oakland Art Novelty Co. and you’re in for a perfect summer night. Order up a Zombie, a powerful blend of White and dark rum, Cruzan blackstrap rum, cinnamon syrup, tropical blueberry syrup, orange Curacao, absinthe, grapefruit and lime juices ““ served over crushed ice. It’s garnished with fresh mint and pineapple leaves ““ and yes, it comes with an umbrella.
Say it with me summer lovers: Gin & Tonic. La Dulce re-envisions this classic with house made seasonal tonics and imports Peruvian cinchona bark pieces to create a fresh syrup. The friendly staff serves this up Ala Madrileña, so we can expect a generously sized glass filled with ice and fresh citrus fruit, just like we would find in Madrid.
Ask Christian Stachel, beverage director at The Peterboro, and he’ll tell you all you need to know about hard-to find sake. “These should really be served chilled,” he advises, serving up a host of options by the glass. The Peterboro is offering Friday pop-ups, happy hour tasting events and more ““ all to extol the virtues of a summer beverage that perfectly compliments even the most complex dishes. Order up Nanbu-Binjin Tojkubutsu Junmai “Southern Beauty,” the coarsely-filtered Sayuri Nigori, or other sake options you won’t find elsewhere in the state, and uncover your new favorite summer drink.
Punch Bowl Social
Get a dose of vitamins with a stop at Punch Bowl Social for fresh-squeezed drinks like the Jessica Rabbit made with fresh ginger, apple and carrot juices and feel completely recharged. If that doesn’t work, might we suggest the Fernet & Coffee combination?
When Evan Hansen, partner at Selden Standard, suggested we try Minister of a Mind we were taken by the name of this cocktail. Then came its ingredients. The new summer option includes mezcal, rhubarb-peppercorn syrup, Cocchi Americano Rosa, fino sherry, lime juice, club soda and a mint garnish. “The rhubarb-peppercorn syrup is a unique seasonal component,” said Hansen, “and we use an awful lot of black pepper to create a long, peppery finish.” Add mezcal and lime, he added, and “it ends up being a spicy, tart, smoky drink that’s both interesting and refreshing.” What else can you possibly need?
Don’t let summer pass by without a stop at this al fresco spot in The Belt. The Skip is known for their frozen drinks. Irish Coffee is the one we crave with it’s a decadent mix of Intelligentsia cold brew, Old Forrester Whiskey, cream and sugar. Simple, icy and delicious.
Wright & Company
Among the most fragrant summery scents, lavender, makes it straight into a cocktail form at Wright & Co. Lavender & Smoke is a summer cocktail for those with an adventurous spirit. It combines lavender syrup and petals with lime juice and the smoke of single malt Laphroiag as well a wine-based apertif called Byrrh. This is one to try.
